Campaign underway to help members of the military

The Oakland County Bar Association’s Veterans Committee, led by Elias Escobedo Jr., issued its annual challenge to OCBA committees and all members to “out fund-raise them” in their collection of items for military men and women serving in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Last year’s collection effort resulted in a record-setting $53,000 worth of items and cash donations, enabling the OCBA to pack more than 171 care packages representing 8,000 pounds of donated goods.

Like last year, the collection effort was formally launched at the OCBA’s Annual Holiday Gala, an event that attracted a record crowd.

This year’s effort will culminate on March 21, according to Lisa Stadig Elliot, executive director of the OCBA.

“If you would like to get in on the friendly and high-spirited competition, and help our armed services, please donate items or cash at the Oakland County Courthouse during the following motion call days: Wednesday, February 6 or Wednesday, March 6,” Stadig Elliot said.

On those dates, the OCBA will staff collection tables from 8-11 a.m. at the North and South entrances.

For those whose practices don’t take you to the Oakland County Courthouse, the OCBA office will be a collection point and is located at 1760 S. Telegraph Rd., Ste. 100, Bloomfield Hills.

“The 3,000 lawyers of the OCBA care very deeply about our men and women on deployment in Iraq and Afghanistan,” said Operation Afghan Iraq Pack
Subcommittee Co-chairman Michael Schloff. “Many of our members have served in combat in Korea, Vietnam, Kuwait, Iraq and Afghanistan and deeply identify with what these modern American heroes are experiencing overseas. For all of us, this is a labor of love.”
