Brinks shareholder reappointed to Chair of Advisory Committee

Lawrence G. (L.G.) Almeda, a shareholder in the Ann Arbor office of Brinks Hofer Gilson & Lione, one of the largest intellectual property law firms in the U.S., was reappointed to serve as chair of the Michigan Advisory Committee of the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights. This is Almeda's second, two-year term as chair. He was first appointed to the U.S. Commission on Civil Rights in 2007. Almeda is a longstanding leader in Michigan's Asian American community. He has served as a commissioner of the Michigan Asian Pacific American Affairs Commission and secretary for the Governor's Advisory Council on Asian Pacific American Affairs. He is also past president of American Citizens for Justice, an organization that was formed in response to the 1982 murder of Detroiter Vincent Chin. The Vincent Chin case ultimately led to national legal milestone change on issues dealing with hate crimes, minimum sentence guidelines and victims' rights. Almeda was recently appointed to serve as a school board member for Summit Academy in Flat Rock, which is operated by The Governor John Engler Center for Charter Schools at Central Michigan University. At Brinks, Almeda is chair of the Nanotechnology Group and the Brazil task force and focuses his practice on patent opinions and prosecution in the medical, chemical, nanotechnology and mechanical arts.
