Bar Association Networking Day slated for students on Feb. 19

Wayne Law is hosting a Bar Association Networking Day starting at noon on Feb. 19 in the atrium of the Law School.

The first-time event is sponsored by Wayne Law’s Career Services Office to increase the Law School’s networking presence in the local legal community. Students are encouraged to engage in networking early and often throughout their time at Wayne Law.

“The event is a two-hour table talk where bar representatives will speak with students about the value of joining a bar association and how bar association networking events can be a bridge to a successful legal career,” said Katherine Fox, director of employer development with CSO.

More than 30 representatives with 15 bar associations are scheduled to mix and mingle with Wayne Law students during the event.

Webinar to teach businesses the essentials as Michigan soon becomes right-to-work state

Michigan businesses may not yet realize it, but they have much to do before the “right-to-work” laws take effect in the state next month.  Employers need new procedures and the planning process can be overwhelming—especially for front-line human resources professionals.

Help is coming through thanks to a free, one-hour, interactive webinar on “right-to-work” issues to be conducted by the Michigan Council of the Society for Human Resource Management (MISHRM) and Butzel Long at noon on Thursday, March 7.

The webinar will feature a panel discussion featuring attorneys from Butzel Long’s Labor and Employment Law Practice Group.  The moderator is Gary W. Klotz.  Panelists include Robert A. Boonin and Craig S. Schwartz.

The webinar will highlight the following:

• Michigan’s “right-to-work” laws and how they may impact unions and collective bargaining strategies including potential union requests to extend current contracts before the law becomes effective on March 28.

• Issues regarding how to administer dues check-offs.

• How the new “right-to-work” legal environment may affect non-unionized employers and their tactics for staying union-free.

• The potential legal challenges to the new laws.

“While the concept of ‘right-to-work’ may sound quite simple, the legal obligations of employers (particularly unionized employers) under the new Michigan statutes, may in fact be quite complex,” said Schwartz.  “A familiarity with the legal parameters of the RTW statutes is critical to avoid significant legal claims by both employees and labor unions.”
This webinar has been submitted to HRCI for continuing education credit approval.  If approved, all eligible participants will receive credit.
