LAD holds small claims workshop at Detroit Public Library Jan. 30
Legal Aid and Defender Association, Inc. held a free workshop on small claims court Jan. 30 at the Detroit Public Library.
The workshop is part of a series designed to teach residents of Wayne, Macomb and Oakland counties how to represent themselves in small claims court and collect money judgments.
Small claims court is a division of the district court which allows resolution of money disputes of $5,000 or less by a judge or magistrate, according to Michelle Johnson, supervising attorney of LAD’s Detroit-Wayne office, who conducted the workshop.
“We expect that as the jurisdictional limit for small claims cases continues to increase, a greater number of individuals will want to handle their own cases in small claims courts,” Johnson said. “We wanted to provide some information to help them be successful.”

Webinar to discuss issues surrounding right-to-work laws
Michigan businesses may not yet realize it, but they have much to do before the “right-to-work” laws take effect in the state next month. Employers need new procedures and the planning process can be overwhelming—especially for front-line human resources (HR) professionals.
Help is coming through thanks to a free, one-hour, interactive webinar on “right-to-work” issues to be conducted by the Michigan Council of the Society for Human Resource Management (MISHRM) and Butzel Long at noon on Thursday, March 7.
The webinar will feature a panel discussion featuring attorneys from Butzel Long’s Labor and Employment Law Practice Group. The moderator is Gary W. Klotz. Panelists include Robert A. Boonin and Craig S. Schwartz.
“While the concept of ‘right-to-work’ may sound quite simple, the legal obligations of employers (particularly unionized employers) under the new Michigan statutes, may in fact be quite complex,” said Schwartz.
