Smary joins Council of the International Bar’s Energy, Environment, Natural Resources and Infrastructure Law Section

Eugene E. Smary, a partner with Warner Norcross & Judd LLP, has been appointed to the governing council of the International Bar Association's Section of Energy, Environment, Natural Resources and Infrastructure Law.

The Section is responsible for coordinating activities of the following IBA committees:
—Environment, Health and Safety Law
—International Construction Projects’ Mining Law
—Oil and Gas Law
—Power Law
—Water Law

Smary has more than 30 years of experience in environmental and resources law. He counsels clients on cross-border issues, environmental compliance, due diligence associated with real property and corporate transactions, mediation of disputes, contaminated site remediation and redevelopment, metallic mineral mining and permitting, power plant siting and permitting and international infrastructure development.  He has been recognized both nationally and internationally for his accomplishments in environmental law.

He is the immediate past chair of the IBA’s Environment, Health and Safety Law Committee.

He also has served as chair of the American Bar Association’s 10,000-member Section of Environment, Energy and Resources, as well as chair of the Environmental Law Sections of the State Bar of Michigan and the Grand Rapids Bar Association, and has served on numerous committees within both associations.  He writes and lectures frequently in the United States and Canada on many environmental subjects, and has taught environmental law as an adjunct associate professor of law at the University of Notre Dame Law School.  In addition, he is a member of the American College of Environmental Lawyers.

Smary has also been recognized as one of The Best Lawyers in America since 1991 and as a Michigan Super Lawyer since 2006. Additionally, Best Lawyers in America named him the 2012 Grand Rapids Environmental Lawyer of the Year.  He has also been included in Euromoney’s Leading Environmental Lawyers in the World and The International Who's Who of Business Lawyers lists.  He is a fellow of the American Bar Foundation and a life fellow of the Michigan State Bar Foundation.
