Legal Aid and Defender to hold free clinic on civil legal services

Legal Aid and Defender Association, Inc. will conduct a free outreach clinic on civil legal services for income-eligible residents of Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties, including the city of Detroit, from 9 a.m. to noon Friday, April 5 at Southfield Human Services, 26080 Berg Road, Southfield.
Attendees are asked to register before 10 a.m., as a LAD attorney will assist only those persons who have done so by that time.

UDM Law sponsors entrepreneurship seminar on Saturday


The University of Detroit Mercy Law School will sponsor a seminar on entrepreneurship Saturday, March 23, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Athenium Hotel in Detroit.  The schedule includes: 
• How to set up and start a business:  Patrick G. Kruse, UDM professor and principal at Patrick G. Kruse PLC;
• How to develop and maintain one’s business:  Elizabeth Jolliffe, former Clark Hill partner, former Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association President, and acclaimed lawyer coach;
• The essentials of business tax: The importance of business categories and write-offs:  Joseph Pia, UDM visiting assistant professor;
• A question and answer session;
• Keynote Speaker:  David Tarver. Tarver has opened and managed successful businesses and now lectures on entrepreneurship at the University of Michigan. Tarver is an entrepreneur, engineer, corporate executive, and community leader.He is the author of “Proving Ground:  A Memoir.”

Cassar presents at  seminar on drafting estate planning papers

Attorney George V. Cassar, Jr. of Southfield-based Maddin, Hauser, Wartell, Roth & Heller P.C. recently served as a speaker at the Institute of Continuing Legal Education’s (ICLE) 22nd Annual Drafting Estate Planning Documents Seminar in Grand Rapids and Plymouth.
In his presentation, “Drafting for and Asking About Awkward and Unusual Estate Planning Topics and Scenarios,” Cassar discussed topics ranging from blended families, second and third marriages and kids to prenuptial agreements, posthumously born children and pet trusts.
Cassar frequently speaks before professional organizations and their clients regarding estate planning, tax and probate matters.
A resident of Grosse Pointe Shores, Cassar received his bachelor’s degree, with honors from the University of Michigan and his master’s in tax law from Wayne State University Law School. He focuses his practice in the areas of estate and business succession planning, taxation and probate.
