SBM section schedules Spring-Board seminar

The State Bar of Michigan Labor & Employment Law Section’s will hold its annual Spring-Board event on Thursday, June 6 at the Reserve at Big Rock Chophouse in Birmingham.

This year’s seminar, scheduled from 4-8 p.m., will be “A Backstage Pass to the EEOC,” and speakers will include investigators, enforcement supervisors, mediators, and trial attorneys from the Detroit Field Office of the EEOC.

The three sessions will be:

• Intake and Investigation: A panel of EEOC Investigators and Enforcement Supervisors will discuss the intake and investigations process, including how to write a persuasive position statement and what the EEOC looks for in deciding whether to reach a finding of cause.

Speakers include Linda Sankovich (Enforcement Manager), Daron Calhoun (Enforcement Supervisor), Travis Nicholson (Investigator), Spyridon Mellos (Investigator), Jamie Dickinson (Investigator), and Deanna Wooten (Investigator).

• Mediation and Conciliation:

This panel will discuss the mediation and conciliation processes at the EEOC, the EEOC's Pro Bono Mediation Initiative, and how to most effectively resolve EEOC charges.  Speakers:  Gail Cober
(Director, Detroit Field Office), Deborah Barno (Administrative Judge/Mediator), and Stephanie Perkins (Mediator).

• Litigation: EEOC trial attorneys will discuss considerations in deciding whether to take a case to litigation, representation of the Charging Party, and settlement with the EEOC. 

Speakers: Nedra Campbell (Trial Attorney), Dale Price (Trial Attorney), Miles Shultz (Trial Attorney), Lauren Burstein (Trial Attorney), and Omar Weaver (Trial Attorney).

The panels will be followed at 6:15 p.m. by a networking period featuring complimentary beer, wine, and hors d'oeuvres.

The cost is $50 in advance, $60 at the door and valet parking is included.
