Ravitz Foundation will match gifts to honor MSU Law’s longest serving adjunct faculty

Michigan State University College of Law is pleased to announce a commitment by The Ravitz Foundation to match one-to-one up to $50,000 in gifts made to the George T. Roumell, Jr., Fund. The fund honors the Law College’s longest-serving adjunct faculty member and recognizes Roumell’s distinguished career teaching labor and arbitration law as an adjunct at the Law College since 1957.

Professor Roumell has made countless contributions to the legal community, to legal education, and especially to the more than 3,500 students who have passed through his classroom, including former Detroit Mayor Dennis Archer, ’70, and Wayne County Circuit Court Judge Robert Colombo, Jr., ’75. An institution at MSU Law, Roumell—now in his mid-80s—continues to practice and teach.

Many alumni fondly recall Professor Roumell as one of their favorite faculty members, and still quote him in their own teaching and daily practice.

“I have long felt the difference between the legal education I received and that offered by most other law schools was the presence of faculty members who actually practice law, as opposed to simply teaching it,” said Leon Bess, ’63. “There is no better example than... Professor George Roumell, who brought, and continues to bring, his practical experience into the classroom.”

Outside the classroom, Roumell has maintained an impressive legal career. He has owned his own law firm and served as president of the State Bar of Michigan and Metro Detroit Bar Association. He regularly travels the country to lecture at conferences and arbitrate contract negotiations and disputes. “I am passionate about the law and about training tomorrow’s lawyers,” Roumell says. “I enjoy meeting new students and staying in touch with former students.” Roumell, a Michigan native, earned his law degree at Harvard University in 1954.

Funds raised will be used to support students and faculty in the area of labor law and arbitration. Donors may make a one-time gift of cash or a pledge payable over up to five years. Planned gifts also are welcome. To make a donation, visit www.law.msu.edu/donate or contact Office of Advancement at 517-432-6840.
