Dinner raises $3,000 for children's books
The United Way of Jackson County Labor Participation Committee's 23rd Annual Spaghetti Dinner raised more than $3,000 to support Jackson County children. Proceeds are being distributed to the Imagination Library, a United Way-endorsed program that provides free books to any Jackson County child up to age five.
In 2012, nearly 4,000 children received almost 48,000 books through the program. Children participating in Imagination Library have shown improved literacy and school readiness skills when compared to children who did not participate.
In addition, nearly 200 meals were delivered to hungry Jackson County residents at the Interfaith Shelter, the John George Home, and the Jackson Friendly Home. Overall approximately 800 meals were served or delivered as part of this year's event.
The dinner is sponsored by the Labor Participation Committee of United Way of Jackson County, and is a joint effort of organized labor in Jackson County to make a difference in the community. Over its 23-year history, the dinner has raised nearly $70,000 to help our friends and neighbors in need.
