Larry Royster named Michigan Supreme Court chief clerk
Attorney Larry Royster, Chief Clerk and Research Director for the Michigan Court of Appeals, has been named Clerk of the Michigan Supreme Court effective May 28. He will also serve as the Supreme Court’s Chief of Staff.
Chief Justice Robert P. Young, Jr. announced the appointment today. “We are extremely fortunate to have someone of Larry’s caliber fill these very important roles for the Court,” Young said. “Larry’s experience, legal expertise, and proven leadership skills make him the clear choice.”
Young also praised outgoing Clerk Corbin R. Davis, who has served in that position since 1983. “Corbin is well known throughout the legal community for his dedication, integrity, work ethics, and good judgment,” Young added. “It says a great deal about Larry that the Court found him to be a worthy successor to Corbin.”
Royster joined the Court of Appeals Prehearing Division in 1985; he then served as a law clerk to Court of Appeals Judge Richard Maher. From 1989 to 1998, Royster served as supervisor of the Court of Appeals’ new Senior Research Division, which prepares research reports for the court’s longer, more complex cases. In 1999, he was named Court of Appeals Deputy Research Director, becoming Research Director two years later. In January 2011, Royster began serving as both Chief Clerk and Research Director for the Court of Appeals.
Royster graduated from Michigan State University with a Bachelor of Landscape Architecture degree; he earned his law degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School.
Jaffe Raitt Heuer & Weiss sponsors Kids Kicking Cancer event
Southfield-based Jaffe Raitt Heuer & Weiss, P.C., recently sponsored a fundraising event to benefit Kids Kicking Cancer, helping to raise more than $13,000 for the nationally recognized nonprofit organization. Jaffe attorney Deborah Rubin coordinated the event in partnership with Kids Kicking Cancer Founder, Rabbi Elimelech Goldberg and the Sports Club of West Bloomfield.
More than 100 children participated in the event, held at The Sports Club of West Bloomfield. Each child was asked to solicit donations for participating in a “sports-a-thon,” which included gymnastics, tennis and martial arts. In addition to these activities, the event featured its first-ever family 5k walk/run, a martial arts demonstration from the students of Kids Kicking Cancer, entertainment, food and prizes.
Kids Kicking Cancer was founded in metro Detroit and helps children manage the stress and pain of their disease and treatments through personalized coaching instructed by black belt martial artists. These children achieve power, peace and purpose by teaching their deep breathing techniques to others to help them reduce stress.
“It is an honor to work for a firm that is so supportive of local charitable organizations and this event was no exception,” said Rubin. “With Jaffe’s support, we were able to sponsor an amazing event, and raise significant funds, which ultimately will help ease the pain of very sick children while empowering them to heal physically, spiritually and emotionally.”
