Miller Canfield Lawyer David Thoms Elected to Madonna University Board of Trustees
David M. Thoms, a principal at Miller Canfield, has been elected to a three-year term on the board of trustees of Madonna University, a Catholic and Franciscan university located in Livonia, committed to teaching, scholarship and service.
Thoms has long been active in the educational community. His service includes being a longtime board member and current president of the Alliance Française de Grosse Pointe. He’s a trustee and executive committee member of the Michigan Colleges Foundation and a trustee of Kalamazoo College in Kalamazoo, Mich. He’s also a Planned Giving Technical Advisor at Greenhills School, a private high school in Ann Arbor. He was previously involved in leadership and fundraising for the University of Michigan’s Kellogg Eye Center and the University of Detroit-Mercy. He was honored with the Officier dans l’Ordre des Palmes Academiques by the French Government for his contributions to French culture and education.
At Miller Canfield, Thoms assists clients with their business, estate and succession planning matters as well as assisting non-profit and charitable organizations with policy, tax, compliance, governance and fundraising.
Thoms earned his juris doctorate from University of Detroit-Mercy and a master of laws with a focus on taxation from Wayne State University. He also earned his bachelor’s degree from Kalamazoo College and a master’s degree in urban planning from Wayne State.
Legal Aid and Defender to conduct Veterans Legal Fair June 17
Legal Aid and Defender Association, Inc. will conduct a Veterans Legal Fair for veterans of the U.S. Armed Forces on Monday, June 17 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the auditorium of the John D. Dingell VA Medical Center, 4646 John R St.
The fair is free of charge to veterans. It will feature workshops on child support; driver’s responsibility, including traffic tickets; expungement of criminal records; and Social Security and Veterans Administration benefits claims. Light refreshments will be served.
Will A. Gunn, general counsel of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, will address the fair at 10 a.m. Gunn is a retired Air Force colonel who served as a military lawyer in the U.S. Air Force Judge Advocate General Corps.
U.S. Reps. John Conyers, Jr., D-13th District, and Gary Peters, D-14th District, will also speak at the fair.
The fair is one in a series of events conducted by LAD as part of its broad based advocacy program. The fair is funded by a grant from Quicken Loans, with additional support from the federal Legal Services Corp., Michigan State Bar Foundation, Michigan Veterans Foundation and the VA.
