Larry Royster has been named Michigan Supreme Court clerk and chief of staff, effective May 28. He replaces Corbin Davis, who has been in that position since 1983 and is retiring.
Royster has served as the Michigan Court of Appeals chief clerk and research director since January 2011.
Royster joined the Court of Appeals Prehearing Division in 1985 and then served as a law clerk to Court of Appeals Judge Richard Maher for a period of time. From 1989 to 1998, he was supervisor of the Court of Appeals new Senior Research Division, which prepares research reports for the court’s longer, more complex cases. In 1999, Royster was named Court of Appeals deputy research director, becoming research director two years later.
Royster graduated from Michigan State University with a bachelor’s degree in landscape architecture. He earned his law degree from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School.
