July sentencing for woman in father’s death
PORT HURON, Mich. (AP) — A St. Clair County woman who was convicted of killing her father and attempting to murder her mother will be re-sentenced on July 11.
Tia Skinner’s life sentence will be revisited because the U.S. Supreme Court banned mandatory no-parole sentences for teens convicted of murder. She was 17 at the time of the attack.
Skinner could get the same sentence, but a judge will be allowed to consider many factors.
Paul and Mara Skinner were attacked at their home in Yale. Prosecutors say Skinner was angry at her parents and plotted with two young men to carry out the crimes.
Defense lawyer John Livesay tells the Times Herald Skinner hopes “for a different outcome, but ultimately it will be a decision in the hands of the judge.”

Coalition still battling against state wolf hunt
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — A coalition that opposes hunting wolves in Michigan is still making its case even though officials have scheduled a hunt for later this year.
The Keep Michigan Wolves Protected campaign is holding forums this week in Kalamazoo, Clarkston and Woodhaven. Organizers say they’ll focus on the ecological and cultural value of wolves and provide information about the hunt.
The coalition includes animal welfare groups, conservationists, Native American tribes and faith leaders. They gathered more than 255,000 signatures.
But legislators rushed through another measure that would make the referendum meaningless by allowing the Natural Resources Commission to establish a hunt. The commission last month scheduled an Upper Peninsula hunt for Nov. 15 to Dec. 31.
