Legal Aid announces new officers, members
At the June 12 meeting of the Board of Directors of Legal Aid of Western Michigan (LAWM), Paul T. Vlachos was elected as its new President. Vlachos, attorney and a partner in the Kalamazoo law firm of Vlachos and Vlachos, has served on the Board since 2001, having previously been on the Board of the former Legal Aid Bureau of SW Michigan (LABSWM) as a 1996 nominee of the Kalamazoo Bar Association. Vlachos, along with brother Nicholas Vlachos, continues a family tradition of support for Legal Aid. LAWM annually presents the Vlachos Award to a local attorney who has made significant contributions to LAWM in honor of Vlachos’s father, attorney John Vlachos, who served on the LABSWM board for over 30 years.
Vlachos succeeds attorney James C. Boerigter, managing partner of Kreis Enderle Hudgins & Borsos PC, Kalamazoo, who was president for 12 years. Boerigter will continue as a member. Boerigter has been an active volunteer with Legal Aid for 22 years, having also served as president of the LABSWM Board prior to its merger with LAWM in 2001.
Other offices include Treasurer Preston Hopson, former Assistant City Attorney for the City of Grand Rapids; Secretary Venessa Remo, LINC, Grand Rapids; and Vice-Presidents Brian McMahon, Troff, Petzke & Ammeson, St. Joseph; Martin Rogalski, Martin L. Rogalski, PC., Jenison; and Syed Naqvi, Belmont, a client representative. The Board also welcomed Marilu Franks, Dowagiac, nominated by the Greater Niles Senior Center, as a representative of the client community.
‘Court Stories features motorcycle relay in support of drug courts
A phalanx of motorcyclists – including 52-1 District Court Judge Robert Bondy – were the center of attention as they rolled up to Ann Arbor’s 15th District Court.
But even more riveting were the stories of recovery told by graduates of the 15th District’s drug and sobriety court program, at the May 22 “All Rise America!” rally, a stop on a 3500-mile cross-country relay in support of drug and sobriety courts.
Spearheaded by the National Association of Drug Court Professionals, the annual All Rise America! National Motorcycle Relay for Recovery commemorates the work of the nation’s drug courts. The Ann Arbor rally was sponsored by the 15th District Court and the Michigan Associa-
tion of Drug Court Professionals.
The “All Rise” video was produced by the Michigan Supreme Court Office of Public Information as part of the Court Stories online video series. Court Stories tells the everyday stories of Michigan courts and the people they serve. The series is on the “Michigan Courts” YouTube channel and on the Court’s web site.
