Macomb County Executive Mark A. Hackel has asked Ralph “Skip” Maccarone to serve as interim Corporation Counsel until a permanent appointment has been confirmed by the Macomb County Board of Commissioners.
Hackel transmitted his selection of Gabriel Orzame to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of the county’s current Corporation Counsel George Brumbaugh on July 2.
The Board of Commissioners has 75 days to complete the confirmation process and has not yet established a confirmation schedule.
“George will be leaving next week, and even if the Board acts quickly, it will still take some time for the transition to take place,” Hackel said. “The county is required to have a Corporation Counsel and because of his knowledge of County government and the charter, I thought he would be an ideal choice.”
Maccarone is an attorney in private practice and was the executive director of the Macomb County Charter Commission.
He also served as the first independent legal counsel to the Board of Commissioners once the charter became effective in January 2011.
Maccarone was the supervisor of Shelby Township from 2000 to 2008.
“Skip is well versed in the charter and he has excellent working relationships in the county’s legal community,” Hackel said. “I don’t know if he will be in the position for a few weeks or a few months, but he’s indicated that he has the flexibility to take on the assignment.”
Maccarone will assume the interim post when Brumbaugh leaves office on July 26.
