Cooley Law School’s Auburn Hills campus recently hosted a State Bar of Michigan Professionalism in Action Orientation for the fall freshman class. The orientation, presented for the 13th time, premiered at the school in May 2009 under then-State Bar of Michigan President Edward Pappas. Numerous judges and lawyers from metropolitan Detroit volunteered to meet in pairs with small groups of six to eight students each to discuss real-life ethics and professionalism issues that the students may confront as lawyers. Among those participating in the program were (left to right) Jeffrey Matis of Garan, Lucow, and Miller PC; Neil MacCallum of Collins, Einhorn, Farrell, & Ulanoff PC; Sylvan Lake attorney Thomas Ryan; Oakland County Circuit Court Chief Judge Nanci Grant; Cooley Auburn Hills campus Associate Dean John Nussbaumer; Thomas Rombach of Law Offices of Thomas C. Rombach; Michigan Supreme Court Justice Mary Beth Kelly, guest speaker; Jay Kaplan with ACLU of Michigan; Leslie Berg with Office of the United States Trustee; Cooley Assistant Dean Frank Aiello; Regina Daniels Thomas of Legal Aid and Defender Association; Rebekah Visconti with State of Michigan Department of Human Services; retired Judge Fred Mester; and Saura Sahu of Miller, Canfield, Paddock & Stone PLC.
