In legal terms, it’s called a change of venue.

In running jargon, it is a change of course that should be “kinder and gentler” for participants.

The 34th Annual Race Judicata, a three-pronged event organized by the Oakland County Bar Association, will take place on Sunday morning, Sept. 22 at a new site, Covington Middle School in Bloomfield Hills.

The school is located at the corner of Quarton Road and Covington Road, just a short trek from the event’s previous home at Andover High School near Long Lake and Telegraph.

The new courses for the 5-kilometer and 10-km runs, along with 5-km walk, will be far less hilly, according to event chairman Wayne Kauffman.

“The two courses from Andover had some very stiff hills in them, while the new courses are much flatter,” said Kauffman, senior patent manager for Bosch in Farmington Hills.

Kauffman, an engineering graduate of Kettering University who earned his law degree from Wayne State University, is an avid runner and a veteran of the half-marathon distance.

A Pennsylvania native, Kauffman said the change of location is just one of the new wrinkles to this year’s edition of the Race Judicata event.

“We also will be starting the 10-km race at 9:15 a.m. and the 5-km run and walk at 9:30 in an effort to speed the finish along,” Kaufmann related. “We think it will allow us to eliminate some of the gap between the 10-km
finish and the awards ceremony that we’ve had in previous years.”

Organizers are encouraging area law firms to enter three-runner teams in the 5-km and 10-km races.

Traveling trophies will be awarded to the top team in each race.

Of course, the event is open to all comers, whether or not they know the difference between “res” and “race.” In fact, ribbons will be presented to the top three finishers in each of the age divisions in the men’s and women’s competitions.

A plaque will be presented to the overall winner of each race.

Registration is available online at www.ocba.org.

The pre-registration deadline is September 16. Race-day registration costs $20 for the 5-km or 10-km run, and $15 for the walk.

Other members of the race committee are Vice Chair Timothy Martin of Harness Dickey & Pierce; Meredith Taunt of Strobl & Sharp; Amanda Kill of Ahern & Kill; Fred Freeman of the Law Office of Fred H. Freeman; David Saperstein of Maddin Hauser Wartell Roth & Heller; Diana Moak of Pugh Moak; and Katherine Fox of Wayne State University.

Dean & Fulkerson is the title sponsor of this year’s Race Judicata, which, of course, is a play on words of the time-honored legal maxim that “repeated reexamination of adjudicated disputes is not in society’s interest.”
