Law firm to make smoke alarm donation

Farmington Hills-based Fabian, Sklar & King, P.C., plans to donate 500 10-year sealed lithium battery operated smoke alarms to the Detroit Fire Department for the company’s fourth annual smoke alarm donation.

The initiative coincides with Fire Prevention Week, which is Oct. 6-12.

Members of the DFD will distribute the alarms to members of the community and install them in homes free of charge.

Inspired by the initiative, Kidde — the Mebane, N.C.-based manufacturer of the alarms — committed to donating an additional 100 alarms — bringing the total number of units donated to the DFD this year to 600.

Formal announcement of the donation to the community will take place Wednesday, Oct. 9 at 10 a.m. at Detroit Fire Department’s Engine 27 at 4700 W. Fort Street in Detroit.

“As attorneys specializing in fire injury, explosion and property damage cases, we have witnessed first hand the devastating impact that fires and explosions can have on individuals and families,” said Stuart Sklar. “Smoke alarms are a critical safety component that every household should have to help save lives, and we hope that members of the Detroit community will take advantage of this campaign and have a smoke alarm installed in their home—which could be the difference between life and death if a fire occurs.”

The firm has handled thousands of property damage claims ranging from propane and natural gas explosions, to multimillion-dollar commercial fire claims for Fortune 500 companies.

Fabian, Sklar & King, P.C. was involved in helping 15 DFD arson investigators become Certified Fire and Explosion Investigators (CFEI) through the National Association of Fire Investigators (NAFI).

The law firm also initiated and organized a three-day, 20-hour training program whereby 15 DFD Arson Section investigators received training from leading fire investigation professionals and educators from around the country.

Following the training, the investigators took and passed the Certified Fire and Explosion Investigator (CFEI) exam.  The law firm covered costs associated with the training.
