Last Tuesday, three Michigan United members joined 200 immigrant rights leaders to demand a vote in the House of Representatives on immigration reform with a path to citizenship. Thousands of demonstrators from “Camino Americano/American Way” cheered on some of the participants involved in peaceful arrests made outside the capital.
Wendy Medrano is a Michigan United member from Kalamazoo whose Salvadoran family was separated by the broken immigration system for 18 years. She took part in the civil disobedience today, saying: “No one else should have to suffer what my family has had to suffer, but every day, 1,100 immigrant families are broken apart. We have the votes today to pass immigration reform. We can end this suffering for so many, but so far, House Republicans are refusing to let us have a vote.”
Medrano was joined by fellow community leaders Larry Provancher and Brannigan Reaser from Kalamazoo.
Immigrant rights advocates have recently stepped up efforts to make Congress acknowledge and act on the results of the last election and countless polls. There is ample evidence that both the national will and the country’s economy favor a path to citizenship for immigrant families. A vote in the House of Representatives is the last hurdle. The coalition began a campaign of civil disobedience starting on August 1st, when 40 leaders were arrested in Washington DC. In September, 100 women leaders from the "We Belong Together" campaign were arrested.
Michigan United is a broad statewide coalition working to reform our broken immigration system, advance housing justice, to protect the rights of low-wage workers and develop leadership. More information can be found at Michigan United’s website:www.miunited.org
