Last Friday an active shooter incident exercise held at the Mercy Health General Campus in Muskegon demonstrated that months of training to make safety officers in the Region 6 Homeland Security Region ready for an active shooter incident had paid off.
Region 6 includes the counties of Clare, Ionia, Isabella, Kent, Lake, Mason, Mecosta, Montcalm, Muskegon, Newaygo, Oceana, Osceola, and Ottawa. While the exercise was based in Muskegon County, individuals from “adjacent” counties were invited. Two members of the Grand Rapids Police Department Bomb Squad were among the almost 100 police, fire and emergency medical personnel who participated.
Though each of the three exercises held had different results, the one pictured at left showed that responders “took control of the scene and planned out their response, and remained calm and saved lives,” according to Norton Shores Police Chief Daniel Shaw, who served as Public Information Officer.
Muskegon Public Safety Director Jeffrey Lewis chaired the exercise, which included tabletop exercises to prepare for Friday’s event.
