Senate votes to let cities levy special tax for police, fire depts.
LANSING, Mich. (AP) — The state Senate has voted to let hundreds more Michigan cities levy a special assessment to fund police and fire departments.
The new taxes could only go into effect if local voters say so.
Michigan now lets townships and just one city — Saginaw — defray the cost of police and fire through special assessments on residents and businesses.
All cities with at least 15,000 residents could levy the assessments under legislation approved by the Senate Wednesday and headed to the House.
The bill could affect nearly 280 cities. The bill’s sponsor, Democratic Sen. Steve Bieda of Warren, says it gives another tool to cities grappling with declining tax bases.
WBA-Straker Bar to host annual Law Student Reception

Wayne Law presents seminar on Supreme Court’s Kiobel Opinion
Wayne State Law School will present “The Supreme Court’s Kiobel Opinion and the Future of Human Rights Litigation in U.S. Courts” on Oct. 23 from 12:15 - 1:15 p.m. at the Spencer M. Partrich Auditorium, 471 W. Palmer in Detroit. The event is free. The Alien Tort Statute provides for litigation in which foreigners bring suit in U.S. courts against other foreigners. In Kiobel v Royal Dutch Petroleum, the Supreme Court ended the popular but unworkable idea that U.S. courts can be used to police behavior around the world. The speaker will be Professor Anthony J. Nichols to present seminar on DUI defense strategies
Renowned expert Mike Nichols will discuss effective defense strategies and techniques in cases where a person is accused of driving under the influence of “something”, usually alcohol or drugs.
