Smoking quit line surpasses 50,000 calls
LANSING (AP) — More than 50,000 people have used Michigan’s program to try to quit smoking in the last 10 years.
The state recently reported that the Michigan Tobacco Quitline has grown from a regional pilot project offering telephone coaching to a comprehensive program since beginning in 2003.
The quit line now has coaching on the Internet, through email and text messaging, and referrals to local quit-smoking programs.
About 23 percent of Michigan adults say they smoke cigarettes on a regular basis. That is higher than the U.S. average.
The quit line is available seven days a week and can be reached at 800-QUIT-NOW (800-784-8669).

Bomb suspect can be forced to take meds
DETROIT (AP) — A mentally ill man charged with placing a bomb outside a Detroit federal building can be forcibly medicated to try to make him competent to face trial, according to an appeals court.
Gary Mikulich, 45, has refused to take medication since his arrest in 2011, according to the government.
“While we should not take lightly the decision to medicate a defendant against his will, we also should not discount the government’s interest in bringing an accused would-be terrorist to justice,” said a three-judge panel at the 6th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals.
“Mikulich has not demonstrated that any special circumstances of this case weaken the government’s clear interest in trying him for the serious crimes of which he stands accused,” the court said.
Mikulich is charged with leaving a tool bag with explosive components outside the McNamara Federal Building in Detroit, 500 miles from his home in the Upper Peninsula.

Tuition up 3.45 percent at state universities
LANSING (AP) — A new report says the average tuition increase among public universities in Michigan this year was 3.45 percent, slightly higher than the increase nationwide.
The Detroit Free Press reports the update comes from the nonprofit College Board.
Nationwide, for in-state students at a four-year public college or university, published tuition and fees increased this year on average 2.9 percent.
Michigan lawmakers set a cap of 3.75 percent for universities to qualify for a portion of $21.9 million in performance funding. Wayne State University, with an 8.9 percent increase, was the only university in the state to exceed the cap and sacrifice the state dollars.
