Thomas M. Cooley Law School recently hosted “Working Together to Stop Bullying” at Cooley’s Auburn Hills campus. The seminar focused on how to stop bullying and harassment in schools under “Matt’s Safe School Law.” The law, signed by Gov. Rick Snyder in 2011, is named after Matt Epling, a high school freshman from East Lansing who killed himself in 2002 after being bullied by upperclassman. The seminar, hosted by Cooley, was specifically for members of the Metropolitan Detroit Bureau of School Studies Inc. Taking part in the seminar were (left to right) Cooley Auburn Hills Dean John Nussbaumer, Tony Marasco, Bernie Minghine, Douglas Pretty, Saginaw County 70th District Court Judge M.T. Thompson Jr., Cooley Professor Monica Nuckolls, and Carl Weiss. “Making sure schools and parents have access to educational resources is key,” said Nuckolls, one of the seminar’s organizers. “Educating about the warning signs, prevention tactics, and consequences that can occur will be the first step of educators working together to stop bullying.”
