Court website is now smartphone-friendly

Smartphone users can now rejoice — the most comprehensive online information source about the Michigan justice system is now in the palm of their hands.

A smartphone-compatible version of the “One Court of Justice” website (www.courts.mi.gov) made its debut Monday, offering another convenient way to access the Michigan court’s site, according to Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert P. Young Jr.

According to a recent study by the Pew Research Center’s Internet and American Life Project, 56 percent of American adults have a smartphone.

As of May 2013, 63 percent of adult cell phone owners surveyed were using their phones to go online, and 34 percent went online mostly using their phones, rather than a desktop or laptop computer, Young noted.

“Since people are increasingly accessing the Internet through cell phones, we wanted to provide the ‘One Court of Justice’ site in a smartphone format that’s convenient and easy to use,” Young explained. “This is another example of Michigan courts working smarter, using technology in this case, to improve public service.”

Users can search Michigan Supreme Court and Court of Appeals cases on the mobile- friendly site, viewing opinions, orders, and docket sheets.

The “One Court of Justice” website includes information about Michigan’s Supreme Court, Court of Appeals, and trial courts. Court forms, court rules, decisions of the Supreme Court and Court of Appeals, and a self-help site are all available on the site.

The new website also features audio of Supreme Court oral arguments.

The court already livestreams its hearings at courts.mi.gov/Courts/MichiganSupremeCourt/oral-arguments/live-streaming/Pages/live- streaming.aspx.

In addition, the court also posts audio recordings of each oral argument on the information page for the corresponding case, along with a brief summary and links to briefs.

Users can subscribe to free e-mail delivery of Michigan Supreme Court and Court of Appeals opinions, Supreme Court orders, and updates on court rules and other administrative issues at
http://courts.mi.gov/opinions_orders/Subscribe-to-Opinions- and-Orders/Pages/default.aspx.

This updated service now allows users to create a free account in GovDelivery, or to sign in using social media accounts in Facebook, Google, or Yahoo.
