Firm helps Philippine relief with Soles4Souls

Strategic Divorce Consulting PLLC is  the drop-off location in Michigan for the global anti-poverty organization Soles4Souls Inc. currently working on Philippine relief efforts.
The firm is collecting shoes at its office located in the Cranbrook Professional Building, 60 West Big Beaver Road, Suite 110 in Bloomfield Hills.
“People are always looking to do something with their shoes, especially children’s shoes, since they outgrow them so fast. I signed up to collect for Soles4Souls just before this horrible disaster in the Philippines and I am so glad to help — to be doing my part,” said owner Diana Gertsmark Brown.
Soles4Souls has already committed at least 200,000 new pairs of shoes to the effort.

University suspends silent professor

BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — A Colorado university has suspended a religious studies professor whose silent protest against racial bias on campus led to complaints that he refused to speak during classes.
Naropa University professor Don Matthews says he launched the protest on the Boulder campus during his classes last week. He says he walked around with a piece of paper explaining his protest and later answered questions during the last 10 or 15 minutes of his classes to make sure students understood their assignments.
According to the Boulder Daily Camera, Naropa officials say the silent protest was unnecessary, and they acknowledged that the university has work to do on issues of diversity.
School officials say they want to resolve the issues and they want Matthews to resume teaching next year.

Lawsuit: Deputy forced man to kneel on scorching asphalt

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) — A new lawsuit says an Albuquerque man suffered severe burns to his knees and buttocks after a Bernalillo County Sheriff’s deputy forced him to kneel and sit on hot asphalt for nearly half an hour.
The federal lawsuit says deputy Chris Starr made Jonathan Griego kneel on the scorching asphalt during a June traffic stop on a day where temperatures reached 96 degrees. The lawsuit says Starr demanded that Griego kneel and sit on the asphalt after finding a needle in his vehicle.
According to the lawsuit, Starr ignored Griego’s complaints that the heat was burning through his pants.
The lawsuit seeks unspecified damages.
Jonlyn Martinez, an attorney representing the county, denied the allegations and asked a judge to throw out the lawsuit.
