Salter-Ferris wins Mary Foster Award

Guests gathered at the WLAM/Washtenaw’s annual holiday party didn’t actually need the warmth cast from a soaring tree decked in crimson lights.
After all, the camaraderie, conversation and bountiful buffet were enough to bring on the glow.
For the tenth year, the downtown loft of attorney Nora Wright was the setting of the soiree, which many consider a favorite of the year.
“Fred and I love hosting the party as it is little work for us,” said Wright, referring to her husband, Fred Beal. “The board members bring all the drinks and supplies, set up and clean up. When I had kids at home, one of them would be recruited to run the elevator, but now Fred handles that task.”
The annual Mary Foster Award, named for Ann Arbor’s first female lawyer, was presented to attorney Heidi Salter-Ferris, who shares a personal injury/medical malpractice/criminal defense practice with husband Don Ferris in Ann Arbor.
Wright told the crowd that Salter-Ferris epitomizes the spirit of the award, and noted her many accomplishments, volunteer work, and awards.
“She chose an area of legal practice heavily dominated by men in both the plaintiff’s and defendant’s bar in the late 80’s and continues to be today,” Wright said,. “And she didn’t just do it in woman-friendly Washtenaw County. Heidi practices throughout the state of Michigan, including counties that have never seen a woman judge, whose case evaluation panels are all men, and whose juries may not have seen an woman lawyer except in “The Good Wife” on TV.”
