Attorney Pat Conlin has announced that he is running for the Washtenaw County Circuit Court seat being vacated by Judge Donald Shelton.
Conlin, a partner with Keusch, Flintoft & Conlin, PC in Chelsea, says the time feels right.
“I have more than 15 years’ experience in a general practice, regularly appearing before all circuit judges and district judges in the county for all of that time,” says Conlin. “My practice is about 60 percent family law, so the current docket assignment would be perfect for my skill set and any future changes would not be new to me.”
Conlin noted that he has practiced in criminal, general civil and family law, all areas that the circuit court traditionally handles.
The Ann Arbor and Chelsea native is a graduate of the University of Notre Dame, where he earned his degree in English literature in 1987. After teaching high school English in New York City for a few years, Conlin returned to Michigan and enrolled at Wayne State University Law School. He earned his Juris Doctor in 1997 after clerking for the Monroe County Circuit Court and at Legal Services of Southeastern Michigan. He began working at Keusch & Flintoft, P.C. in June of 1998.
Conlin, whose practice includes both transaction and litigation, says he recognizes the value of alternative dispute resolution as well as a person’s right to a day in court. In the end, he says, it boils down to relationships.
“If a family relationship is disintegrating, a judge can intervene to improve that process and in the end, can make a measured decision about how the family goes forward,” he says. “I believe that litigants will see that I do strive to assist the process, that I am fair and that I can engage with them to reach an efficient and compassionate resolution.”
Conlin is active in the community and serves on boards that include Chelsea Community Hospital and Grace Clinic of Chelsea. He is a past president of the Washtenew County Bar Association and the Rotary Club of Chelsea.
The primary election in August will be followed by the general election in November. Attorneys Veronique Liem and Michael Woodyard have announced their candidacies for the same seat.
