Varnum attorney Luis Avila has been appointed to the Michigan Board of Medicine. In announcing the appointments, Gov. Rick Snyder said, “I appreciate the willingness of this talented group to serve on this important board.”
The 19-member board is responsible for the examination, regulation, licensing and registration of physicians and surgeons, and the discipline of licensees who have violated the Michigan Public Health Code. The board, located within the Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs, oversees the practice of more than 36,000 licensed physicians.
Avila is an associate in Varnum's Labor and Employment practice group. He has a wide range of experience in traditional labor matters, including grievances, arbitrations, collective bargaining negotiations, union drives, and matters in front of the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) and the Michigan Employment Relations Commission (MERC).
Avila’s experience spans the United States, Mexico and Europe. Luis has worked at the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights in Switzerland, the Centre for Advice on Individual Rights in Europe, the American Civil Liberties Union of Michigan, and the Florence Immigration and Refugee Rights Project in Arizona.
He received his B.A. with honors in Business from Calvin College, and his J.D. from the University of Michigan Law School.
Another local resident appointed with the same group was Kara Morley-Smolek of Ada, a physician/lead pediatrician with Mercy Health Physician Partners and a clinical assistant professor with the Michigan State University College of Human Medicine.
Varnum is a leading Michigan law firm providing a broad range of legal services to meet the complex needs of its clients.
