Judy Sherman was born and raised in Detroit. After graduating from Alma College, she was a court reporter in Ann Arbor for 12 years before going on to earn her law degree, magna cum laude, from Detroit College of Law.
Sherman is a principal with Foley, Baron, Metzger & Juip, PLLC , which has offices in Ann Arbor, Livonia and Carmel, Indiana. She serves as head of the Appellate Group at the firm, and focuses her practice on appellate law and the representation of health care organizations in the areas of medical malpractice and general liability.
Prior to joining the firm, Sherman practiced as an appellate attorney in the research division of the Michigan Court of Appeals.

What is your most treassured material possession? A locket that belonged to my grandmother.
What advice do you have for someone considering law school?
The practice of law is an art, not a science, so let your own personality shine through.
If you weren’t a lawyer, what would you be? A teacher.

Your proudest moment as a lawyer? The first time I argued before the Michigan Supreme Court.
Your worst moment as a lawyer? Hitting “Reply All” when I really, really shouldn’t have!!
What is your happiest childhood memory? Spending summers with my family in the Upper Peninsula.
Which things do you not like to do? Home repairs.
What would surprise people about your job? How fulfilling it can be to represent clients you truly believe in.
If you could trade places with someone for a day, who would that be? Jon Stewart – wouldn’t it be fun to host The Daily Show just once???
What’s the most awe-inspiring place you have visited? I have traveled all over the world, but for me, nothing beats watching the sunset in Grand Teton National Park.
What’s your greatest achievement? Raising two wonderful, talented children.
If you could have one super power, what would it be? Time travel.
What would you say to your 16-year-old self? “Buckle up, kid.
It’s going to be a crazy ride.”
Must-see TV: “House of Cards.”
What’s your biggest regret? I wouldn’t be where I am without making some mistakes, so I don’t really have any regrets.
What’s one thing you would like to learn to do? Speak another language.
What is something most people don’t know about you? Only my grandchildren know that I can still stand on my head!
If you could have dinner with three people, living or dead, who would they be? There are too many possibilities to pick just three, but the group would have to include somebody that would make me laugh, somebody that would make me think, and somebody that I love or have loved.
Can’t-live-without technology? I couldn’t live without my Kindle and iPad.
Favorite law-related movie: “To Kill a Mockingbird.”
If you can help it, where will you not return? Las Vegas.
Favorite place to spend money: On my three grandchildren.
Where would you like to be when you’re 90? Still living a productive life, surrounded by my family and friends.
