The March selection for the Macomb County Bar Foundation History Book Club was “Devil in the Grove; Thurgood Marshall, the Groveland Boys and the Dawn of a New America” by Gilbert King. Among those gathering for the discussion were (left to right) Ken Lampar, director of Macomb Literacy Partners; Doug Ross, former state senator and longtime educator; Carol Ross; and Mount Clemens attorney William Staugaard. The book, which was awarded the 2013 Pulitzer Prize for general nonfiction, deals with Thurgood Marshall's defense of four young black men in Lake County, Florida, who were falsely accused of raping a white woman in 1949. The Macomb County Bar Foundation sponsors the monthly book discussion sessions at the Barnes &?Noble book store in Shelby Township. The club was formed last year to discuss books that focus on constitutional history, the Civil War, World Wars I and II, the courts and other significant historical events.
