To celebrate Law Day, the Michigan Supreme Court Learning Center will present special tours and activities on May 1.
Student groups from Chippewa Middle School (Okemos), St. Margaret School (Otsego), and Huntington Elementary (Riverview), and Korean officials attending an educational program at Michigan State University will visit the Learning Center to learn about the importance of voting and how it relates to the judicial branch of government.
Activities will include mock voting sponsored by the Lansing City Clerk, and a temporary exhibit about judicial campaign ethics, which will include campaign materials from former Justice G. Mennen Williams’ judicial and gubernatorial races.
Guest speakers include Supreme Court Justice Michael F. Cavanagh, Court of Appeals Judge Amy Ronayne Krause, 54A District Court Judge Louise A. Alderson, State Court Administrator John A. Hohman, Jr., and Supreme Court General Counsel Joseph Baumann.
In 1957, American Bar Association President Charles S. Rhyne envisioned a special day to celebrate the U.S. legal system.
President Eisenhower established Law Day in 1958 as a day of national dedication to the principles of government under law.
The national theme for Law Day 2014 is “American Democracy and the Rule of Law: Why Every Vote Matters.”
The Learning Center is open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tours last one hour and are available on a walk-in basis, although groups of 10 or more are asked to schedule tours in advance.
The Learning Center offers resources for educators and students, including lesson plans, educational games, a free newsletter, and the 2013-2014 Educator Guide.
