PHOTO COURTESY OF COOLEY LAW SCHOOL
Six attorneys were recognized during the 29th annual Thomas M. Cooley Law Review Distinguished Brief Awards Banquet on June 25 in Lansing. The awards recognized the most scholarly briefs filed before the Michigan Supreme Court, as determined by a panel of Cooley Law School professors.
“The purpose of this award is to recognize excellence in written advocacy,” said Rabih Hamawi, Symposium editor of the Thomas M. Cooley Law Review. “Because of the quality submissions received, six briefs were selected to be honored, which is a first in the Law Review’s 29-year history.”
The panel evaluated the briefs on seven criteria: question presented, point headings, statement of the case, argument and analysis, style, mechanics, and best overall brief. The six briefs selected included:
—Clifford W. Taylor and Larry J. Saylor; Miller, Canfield, Paddock and Stone, PLLC; Majestic Gold, LLC v. Lake Walden Country Club, Inc.
—Anthony F. Caffrey III, R. Carl Lanfear and Paul M. Kittinger; Cardelli Lanfear, P.C.; Sholberg v. Truman
—David A. McCreedy; Wayne County prosecutor; People v. Garrett
—Jessica A. McGivney and John J. Bursch (as previously reported in the Grand Rapids Legal News for 6/20/2014); Michigan Attorney General’s Office; Andrie, Inc. v. Department of Treasury
—Paul D. Reingold; Michigan Clinical Law Program; Makowski v. Snyder
—Daniel S. Korobkin, Michael J. Steinberg and Kary L. Moss; American Civil Liberties Union Fund
of Michigan; Ter Beek v. Wyoming (oral arguments based on this brief were
covered in the 10/16/2013 issue of the Grand Rapids Legal News)
Before the award cere-
mony, guests heard from
the Honorable Bridget McCormack, Michigan Su-
preme Court Justice, who is also a previous recipient of Cooley’s Distinguished Brief Award.
