Michigan's highest court prepares to open new term

The Michigan Supreme Court begins its new term with a variety of cases on the docket, including a Macomb County tax matter.

The first case on the opening day docket Oct. 7 focuses on whether interest and administrative fees for delinquent taxes can be waived in a Michigan Tax Tribunal proceeding in which the Macomb County Treasurer was not a party. Among the questions in the case is whether the plaintiff’s complaint for relief falls under the exclusive jurisdiction of the tax tribunal.

Those arguments will be held in the historic Supreme Court courtroom on the third floor of the State Capitol building.

That afternoon and for the next two days, oral arguments will be held in the Supreme Court’s sixth floor courtroom at the Michigan Hall of Justice.

The court will hear 10 other cases, including issues of funding a legislative mandate, the Public School Employees Retirement Act, the Public Employee Retirement
System Investment Act (PERSIA), breach of contract, criminal offenses, the Open Meetings Act (OMA) and governmental immunity.
