Eastern Michigan University’s Paralegal Studies Degree Program has finalized a new agreement with Washtenaw Community College (WCC) that will allow WCC students to transfer directly into EMU’s Paralegal Studies Program.
“This exciting agreement is the culmination of a few years of joint work with WCC,” said Nancy Caine Harbour, EMU Paralegal Program Coordinator. “We were able to sit with WCC and work out the course work for the benefit of the students at both institutions.
“Our work, particularly with WCC Professor Ruth Ann Walsh, allowed us to develop a program that will avoid duplication of course work and that allows a streamlined transfer from WCC to EMU.”
The goal of the agreement, Harbour said, is to offer students an excellent paralegal /pre-law foundation at WCC that prepares them for university-level work when they arrive at EMU for their Bachelor’s Degree.
Harbour pointed out that the Bachelor of Science degree in paralegal studies not only prepares students to work as paralegals upon graduation, but it is also a solid pre-law degree for students intending to enter law school and earn a Juris Doctor degree.
“In our EMU program, students essentially receive the first two years of law school courses at a university level,” Harbour said. “Our graduates have been admitted to every law school in the area. Our paralegal grads write back to me and tell me how helpful the legal research and writing courses were to their success, not only in law school but in the legal profession.”
A paralegal degree allows students to immediately enter the law profession working under attorney supervision.
“It is a great way to get inside the law without incurring the significant debt of today’s law school education,” Harbour said.
EMU’s Paralegal Program, which is ABA approved, offers three courses in legal research and writing to its majors, as well as core courses in tort law, civil procedure, court rules and family law. Elective courses include cyber law, administrative law, women and the law and bankruptcy law.
“We educate our students for work in today’s legal profession,” Harbour said.
