The University of Michigan Law School Environmental Law & Policy Program will host Professor Michael Wara, Associate Professor of Law at Stanford Law School, as the featured speaker in the ELPP Lecture Series. The event, which is free and open to the public, is slated for 11:45 a.m., Thursday, Nov. 20, in South Hall room 1020, 701 S. State St. A lunch will be served.
An expert on energy and environmental law, Wara's research focuses on climate and electricity policy. His current scholarship lies at the intersection between environmental law, energy law, international relations, atmospheric science, and technology policy.
Wara was formerly a geochemist and climate scientist and has published work on the history of the El Niño/La Niña system and its response to changing climates, especially those warmer than today. The results of his scientific research have been published in premier scientific journals, including Science and Nature. Wara's research focuses on the emerging global market for greenhouse gases and the Post-Kyoto regime for reducing their emissions. His interests also include the interaction between climate, water, and endangered species management.
Wara holds a J.D. from Stanford Law School and a Ph.D. in Ocean Sciences from the University of California, Santa Cruz. His doctoral research focused on the interaction between long-term shifts in global climate and tropical ocean/atmosphere dynamics. He joined Stanford Law in 2007 as a research fellow in environmental law and as a lecturer in law. Previously, he was an associate in Holland & Knight's Government Practice Group, where his practice focused on climate change, land use, and environmental law. He is a research fellow at the Program in Energy and Sustainable Development in Stanford’s Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies and a Center Fellow at the Woods Institute for the Environment.
Previous speakers in this lecture series were Susan Hedman, Administrator for the EPA Region 5 Office in Chicago, with a September presentation, “U.S. EPA Update: Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation”; and in October, the program hosted Susan Biniaz, former deputy legal adviser at the U.S. Department of State where she was the lead climate change lawyer for more than 20 years and was considered to be the Obama Administration's top international lawyer handling climate-change issues.
