Washtenaw County’s premier all-attorney R & B band Soultivity will play at a charity fundraiser 5:30 to 9:30 p.m., Friday Dec. 12, at Papi O’s Nightclub, 2275 Ellsworth Road, Ypsilanti, on the corner of Ellsworth and Hewitt. The event includes live music, dancing, pizza and salad.
Soultivity will be joined by special guests the Sanctuary Blues band from Brighton who will play a set or two starting at 10 p.m.
Admission is free with a donation of a new, unwrapped toy for Toys for Tots or Community Action Network; or protein-rich dry goods such as tuna, soups, peanut butter and cereal for Food Gatherers; or rawhide bones, canned cat food, pet toys, cat beds, or Cheese Whiz for the Humane Society of Huron Valley.
There will be a cash bar; organizers recommend attendees use a cab or designated driver.
Soultivity, which has performed together for about five years, features deputy trial court administrator Robert Carbeck on drums, assistant prosecuting attorneys John Reiser on keyboard and Jon Emmons playing bass; and assistant public defenders Robin Stephens and Joy Gaines on vocals. The band also features Stefani Carter who has done administrative law work for the county. Other band members include local private attorneys Mike Gatti, Charlie Groh, Scot Muenzel and Bob Killewald.
Performing seven to eight “gigs” a year, Soultivity plays primarily for charity events such as the Relay for Life Walkathon, fundraisers for cancer research and the Michigan Foster Parents conference; and for bar association functions including the State Bar of Michigan annual conferences in Grand Rapids and Lansing as well as the American Bar Association Battle of the Bands showcase in Chicago.
“We’ve played everywhere from the Museum of Art in Chicago to the back of a flatbed truck at the Milan Fair,” Reiser says.
This is the band’s fifth annual Rockin’ Christmas party and along with having a great time, Soultivity has raised thousands of dollars in money and donations for local charities. Donations are coordinated, food organized and decorations set up by assistant prosecutor Dianna Collins and her crew from the prosecutor’s office.
