Lawrence D. McLaughlin, partner at Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP and chair of its Real Estate Department has been named to the 2014 Commercial Real Estate Hall of Fame by Midwest Real Estate News. Hall of Fame members are chosen from hundreds of Midwest commercial real estate professionals, who are nominated each year, for the depth of their experience and their contributions to the profession. McLaughlin is one of only three attorneys among the 70 professionals named this year. The vast majority are brokers and developers.
McLaughlin has been the chair of Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn LLP's Real Estate Department, which includes more than 50 attorneys, for the past 15 years. He has been a real estate attorney for more than a total of 35 years and represents developers of commercial, industrial and residential real estate. He advises clients regarding acquisitions, land use, entitlements, development incentives, entity formation, joint ventures, financing, construction, leasing, taxation, sales, workouts and restructuring.
McLaughlin has been recognized by many independent sources as a leading real estate attorney. Chambers USA: America's Leading Lawyers for Business has named him as one of a handful of "Star" performers across the country since 2005. In 2014, Chambers stated, "Standout performer Lawrence McLaughlin is chair of the firm's real estate department and represents clients in matters spanning commercial, industrial and residential real estate. Sources describe him as 'an expert in the field with a great depth of knowledge.'"
He also has been recognized by The Best Lawyers in America since 1991 and among the top 100 lawyers by Michigan Super Lawyers since 2006. In addition, McLaughlin has been named a "Leader in the Law" by Michigan Lawyers Weekly and recognized in the International Who's Who of Real Estate Lawyers.
McLaughlin was recently named co-chair of the International Council of Shopping Centers (ICSC) 2015 U.S. Law Conference, its 45th annual Law Conference, and will serve as chair of the Conference in 2016. He has served on the Law Conference Program Planning Committee since 2004. The ICSC is the shopping center industry's premier global trade association and the U.S. Law Conference is the pre-eminent legal conference for the industry attracting in excess of 1,200 registrants annually.
In addition, McLaughlin has been a member of the American College of Real Estate Lawyers (ACREL) for nearly 15 years. He also is a member of its Board of Governors and its Program Planning Committee. He previously served the organization as chair of its Member Selection Committee. ACREL admits members by invitation only after a rigorous screening process. Its distinguished, nationally-known lawyers have been admitted to the organization based on their outstanding legal ability, experience and high standards for professional and ethical conduct in the practice of real estate law.
He earned a J.D., magna cum laude, from Wayne State University Law School and a B.S.M.E. from the General Motors Institute.
