Devon Glass is a partner with Secrest Wardle in Lansing. He earned a degree in medical technology from Michigan State University in 2001 and his Juris Doctor from Michigan State University College of Law in 2004.
Glass has 10 years of experience representing insurers, corporations, and individuals in a variety of first-party motor vehicle related claims. What is your most treasured material possession? My comic book collection, 6,000-plus at this time.
What advice do you have for someone considering law school? Make sure you fully understand the financial obligations that are involved.
Favorite local hangouts: Crunchy's or Zoobie's Old Town Tavern.
Favorite websites: various blogs to keep up on current events.
Favorite CD: Any 311 music.
What would surprise people about your job? Understanding the law is only a part of what being a lawyer involves. Building relationships with counsel on both sides of the divide is as important to resolving a claim as having the law on your side.
What do you wish someone would invent? Teleportation so I wouldn't have to drive Michigan's roads at any time.
What has been your favorite year so far? 2014 by far. I got engaged to the love of my life, made partner at my firm, and became a small business owner when I purchased a local business in Okemos.
What is your most typical mood? Jovial.
Why did you become a lawyer? I was three months from graduating from undergrad and I realized I was not going to be attending medical school the next fall. In exploring all my options, I decided I wanted to keep going to school and law school seemed like a good fit. It turned out to be the best decision I ever made.
If you could trade places with someone for a day, who would that be? No one. I love being me.
What's the most awe-inspiring place you've ever been? Hiking the Inca Trail in Peru. The landscape is breathtaking.
What did you do last weekend? Continued working on my house, getting ready to sell it.
If you could have one super power, what would it be? Super speed. It would allow me to do more things in less time.
What would you say to your 16-year-old self? Things will be amazing in 20 years. Enjoy the journey.
What is your proudest moment as a lawyer? In law school I was enrolled in the MSU College of Law Rental Housing Clinic and found myself in a bench trial over whether the landlord unlawfully evicted my client. With only three semesters of law school under my belt, and facing an experienced attorney on the other side, I was able to obtain a favorable judgment for my client.
How would you describe your home? In progress. We just bought a new house and are in the process of selling our current house.
What is one thing you would like to learn to do? Work with my hands to do household repairs.
What is something most people don't know about you? I was a licensed EMT for three years and worked in the ER at McLaren f/k/a IRMC as an undergrad and in law school. That experience has, more than anything, helped my career as a personal injury attorney because it gave me the medical background to more fully understand someone's injury claims and treatment.
What do you drive? A Ford C-Max Hybrid.
What would you drive if money were no object? I'd hire a driver and wouldn't really care what I was riding around in.
