In a joint effort, the American Bar Association Section on Real Estate, Trust and Estate Law and the ABA Commission on Hispanic Legal Rights & Responsibilities has launched a 20-minute video, available in English and in Spanish, geared to help Hispanic homebuyers better understand the home-buying process.
The video, titled "The Keys to My House" in English and "Las Llaves de Mi Casa" in Spanish, walks a prospective homebuyer through the steps a consumer should take in buying a home. The goal of the video is to help Hispanics, a group disproportionately affected during the mortgage foreclosure crisis that emerged in 2009, feel more comfortable about entering the home-buying process.
Prior to the real estate collapse, experts said many Hispanic families did not fully understand the mechanics of buying a home, making them vulnerable to unfavorable purchase and financing contracts. Through the video, the two ABA partners hope to make future homebuyers more comfortable in navigating the process as well as provide a broader educational resource.
To complement the information on the video, the two ABA entities also prepared resource pages, in English and in Spanish, with guides that offer Hispanics and others in the home-buying process with information about finding a housing advisor, things to look for in the home purchase contract and information about financing options.
The ABA Commission on Hispanic Legal Rights and Responsibilities identifies and addresses legal issues affecting the Latino community, including voting rights, civil rights and immigration, among several areas of interest. The goal is to determine how the ABA can continue to pursue and improve upon its commitment to righting the wrongs of discrimination of Latinos, who numbered about 50.5 million in 2010 and represent the fastest-growing group in our nation.
The ABA Section on Real Estate, Trust and Estate Law, with 22,000 members, provides leadership and subject matter expertise on current regulatory and legal issues, trends and best practices to U.S. and international lawyers, paralegals, real estate and financial services professionals, law students and legal educators to better serve their clients.
