Western Michigan University Cooley Law School Associate Dean Joan Vestrand (right) recently spoke at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina, in Charleston, South Carolina. Vestrand’s presentation, “Leading with Character: The Lessons from Ferguson,” was geared toward teaching the school’s cadets about the importance of maintaining a positive character in both personal and professional relationships. In Vestrand’s speech, she explored the role of character in the events in Ferguson. She also introduced a different approach for tackling difficult social problems, in which she challenges individuals to seek to identify root issues to repair human relationships. This was Vestrand’s second consecutive year speaking at The Citadel’s annual Principled Leadership Symposium. This year’s program was titled “Principled Leadership as Honor: The Code, the Medal, the Ethos.” The keynote speaker was the United States’ 16th Chairman of Joint Chiefs of Staff, General Peter Pace. Vestrand is pictured with her student escort, Cadet William Beaudoin (left), a senior at The Citadel.
