A discussion was held recently at the University of Detroit Mercy School of Law in Detroit regarding current developments and topics in patent law and policy. Among those on hand for the event was Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property and Director of the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office Michelle K. Lee (left). Welcoming Lee to the discussion held in the UDM Law atrium were (left to right) Intellectual Property Law Section Chair Karl T. Ondersma of Gardner, Linn, Burkhart & Flory LLP in Grand Rapids and UDM Law Dean Phyllis L. Crocker. During the event, sponsored by the White House Business Council and the State Bar of Michigan Intellectual Property Law Section, Lee discussed several key initiatives of the USPTO. Those included the recently-announced Patent Quality Initiative aimed at enhancing the quality of patent examination and issued patents as well as the rule making that is currently underway with respect to AIA reviews in the Patent Trial and Appeal Board. Lee also discussed current proposals for patent reform legislation pending or under consideration in Congress, and more generally, the role of patents and other forms of intellectual property in driving innovation.
