Legacy Trust art competition public voting is open

The public is invited to the Grand Rapids Art Museum on May 5 and 6 to cast a ballot in the Legacy Trust Award Collection, or LTAC, art competition.

Meijer has graciously provided free admission to the GRAM on both days of public voting, so attendees can visit the museum after casting their ballots.

Now in its sixth year, the LTAC convenes a panel of artists, community and business leaders and others to help select winning entries, which will be sponsored in ArtPrize. The celebrity judges will select one LTAC winner, the public will choose two winners and, for the third year, the LTAC Advisory Committee will present the Lillian Perry Walker award, to honor the young woman whose spirit was the spark that brought LTAC to life in 2010.

Online voting opens 12:01 a.m. May 5 and ends at 11:59 p.m. May 6.

The celebrity judges include:

—Cathy Bissell, director of corporate affairs at BISSELL Inc. and founder of the BISSELL Pet Foundation, which sponsors the Partners for Pets Program, assisting over 1400 animal welfare organizations. Bissell is an amateur photographer, art collector and lover of the arts.

—Robert Andy Coombs, a Kendall College of Art and Design graduate who made a splash in 2012 ArtPrize with his “Disabilities and Sexuality” entry. Coombs, who suffered a spinal cord injury in 2009 that left him paralyzed from the shoulders down, was selected for the juried Top 25 in the two-dimensional category for his photo series.

—Dana Friis-Hansen, director and CEO of the Grand Rapids Art Museum. Before taking the helm at the GRAM in 2011, Friis-Hansen served as executive director of the Austin Museum of Art in Austin, Texas, and in several curatorial positions at other museums in Houston, Boston, New York and Tokyo.

—Linda LaFontsee, co-owner of LaFontsee Galleries. A professional painter, LaFontsee has received the YWCA Tribute Award for Business and the Michigan Governor’s Awards for Arts and Culture.

—Richard A Roane, a partner at Warner Norcross & Judd LLP, amateur painter and lover of the arts.  Roane and his husband have an extensive art collection and often open their Grand Rapids home to raise funds in support of arts organizations like the Grand Rapids Symphony. Active professionally and within the community, Roane serves on committees for Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park and the Grand Rapids Community Foundation.

Sponsored by Grand Rapids-based wealth management advisors Legacy Trust, LTAC is open to all Michigan artists with disabilities. Winning artists’ work will be displayed at Artprize, at DeVos Place, downtown.
