LANSING (AP) — Several state parks in Michigan are planning Fourth of July celebrations without fireworks in an effort to quietly honor veterans.
The participating parks are good camping locations for veterans and others who prefer a noise-free holiday celebration, the state Department of Natural Resources said.
The parks are located away from urban areas that often host large fireworks displays.
Events for “Fireworks-Free Fourth of July” were organized after a veteran noted how fireworks and other loud noises could bring up distressing memories from military experiences and affect those with post-traumatic stress injury, organizers said.
The DNR has partnered with the Michigan Veterans Affairs Agency on the effort. The agency’s Director Jeff Barnes said “PTSI ... can affect anyone, and an event like the Fireworks-Free Fourth is a great alternative when celebrating our nation’s freedom.”
Parks involved in the effort include Bewabic State Park in Iron County, Brighton Recreation Area-Bishop Lake Campground in Livingston County, Cheboygan State Park in Cheboygan County, Craig Lake State Park in Baraga County, Hayes State Park in Lenawee County and Lake Hudson State Park in Lenawee County.
Other participating parks are Leelanau State Park in Leelanau County, Menominee River State Recreation Area in Dickinson County, Orchard Beach State Park in Manistee County, Rifle River Recreation Area in Ogemaw County, Sleepy Hollow State Park in Clinton County and Wells State Park in Menominee County.
