Among those participating in the child support help program were (front, left to right) Robert J. Colombo Jr., chief judge of Wayne County’s Third Circuit Court; Zenell B. Brown, executive administrator of the court; Kathleen M. McCarthy, presiding judge of the court’s Family Division; and Erin Lincoln, assistant friend of the court; along with (back row, left to right) Lt. Tim Harris of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Department; Kent Weichmann, Friend of the Court; Lyn Yeager, attorney with Legal Aid and Defender Association’s Civil Law Group; and Dave Marsh, retired friend of the court.
The Salvation Army William Booth Legal Clinic and Legal Aid and Defender Association, Inc. (LAD) conducted a child support help program recently at the Detroit Public Library.
Attendees could learn how to check their child support accounts on line, seek appropriate child support reductions and modifications, and consult with volunteer attorneys.
The program was one of a series of “Everyday Legal Issues Seminars” supported by various community agencies, including Wayne County Head Start, JVS Jewish Vocational Services, Detroit Head Start Fatherhood Initiative and Wayne County Friend of the Court.
Other agencies supporting the series are Abundant Children & Family Services Agency, Wayne County Mediation Center and Wayne County Community College District.
Among those conducting the program were Robert J. Colombo Jr., chief judge of Wayne County’s Third Circuit Court; Kathleen M. McCarthy, presiding judge of the court’s Family Division; and Lyn A. Yeager, an attorney with LAD’s Civil Law Group who specializes in family law.
“We’re encouraging people with child support issues to come down and get some help and get their problems solved,” Colombo said. “Nothing feels better than providing support for your child.”
“It’s especially important in Wayne County because we have so many children living below the poverty level,” Colombo said.
McCarthy said the initiative is aimed at providing those “who need help with child support, custody and parenting time issues with an opportunity to speak with representatives of the various agencies to ensure success with their cases.”
LAD serves residents of Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties, including the city of Detroit.
“We work with clients in a comprehensive manner, so that as we solve their legal problems, we help solve other problems as well,” LAD President and CEO Deierdre L. Weir said. “We help people rebuild their lives and help families stay together.”
