The Michigan Supreme Court has named Macomb County Circuit Court Judge Richard L. Caretti to serve in a newly-added position on the county’s business court.
“By creating and operating special business-focused dockets in our circuit courts, we have developed expertise, resources, and training so that complicated business matters are concluded more quickly and resolved consistently,” Supreme Court Chief Justice Robert P. Young, Jr. said Tuesday in announcing the appointment.
Caretti has served on the Macomb County Circuit Court bench since 2002, presided as chief circuit judge for two years and currently serves as the presiding judge for the court’s civil division.
He also served as a “Settlement Conference Judge” for the Michigan Court of Appeals.
Previously, Caretti practiced business law for 23 years.
He earned his law degree from the Detroit College of Law in 1980, after serving eight years as a cadet and police officer in the Detroit Police Department.
Caretti joins Judge Kathryn Viviano as the county’s second business judge. Viviano replaced retired judge John Foster earlier this year as the sole business court judge in Macomb.
Business courts are intended to provide a case management structure that facilitates more timely, effective and predictable resolution of complex business cases.
Macomb County has been operating a business court docket under a pilot program since late 2011.
In 2012, Public Act 333 required circuit courts with three or more judges to have “business courts” for business and commercial cases where the amount at stake is over $25,000.
Meanwhile, the high court also named Judge Lita M. Popke to serve as business court judge on the Wayne County Circuit Court bench.
She is replacing retiring Judge Daniel P. Ryan.
Popke first joined the Wayne County Circuit bench in 2000 and has served in the court’s civil division since 2012.
She previously practiced business law, appearing before the Michigan Court of Appeals and the Michigan Supreme Court.
Popke received her law degree from the University of Detroit Law School in 1983.
