Mary Chartier Named Secretary/Treasurer of the SBM’s Marijuana Law Section

Alane & Chartier, P.L.C. announced that one of A&C’s founding partners, Mary Chartier, has been named to the position of secretary/treasurer of the State Bar of Michigan’s Marijuana Law Section. Chartier has argued and won many cases in this area of law, including cases at the Michigan Supreme Court and Michigan Court of Appeals.

Since 2002, Chartier has taught at Western Michigan University Thomas M. Cooley Law School, including teaching the state’s first Medical Marijuana Class and Advanced Legal Research and Writing, a third-year law school class that focuses on appellate advocacy, statutory drafting and interpretation, and contract drafting and interpretation.

The State Bar of Michigan is only the second state bar association in the nation, behind Colorado, to add a Marijuana Law Section to their recognized platform of specialties.

The Marijuana Law Section will be made up of attorneys from many different disciplines of law, including but not limited to, bankruptcy, family law, worker’s compensation, business, and criminal defense.

One of the goals of the section will be to educate attorneys about the various changes in Michigan’s marijuana laws.

Detroit police plan to use body cameras for all officers

DETROIT (AP) — The Detroit Police Department plans to join a growing number of law enforcement agencies in using body cameras for all officers.

The office of Mayor Mike Duggan says in a statement that details will be announced Tuesday afternoon along with plans to ensure that all patrol cars have working dash cameras. Police Chief James Craig and other officials will be on hand for the announcement.

In March, Duggan and Craig announced a test run of body cameras. They said the department is seeking greater transparency in its daily dealings with the public.

A number of other Michigan departments are adding body cameras, including Bay City. President Barack Obama has promoted the use of body cameras by police after last year's shooting death of 18-year-old Michael Brown in Ferguson, Missouri.
