Western Michigan University Cooley Law School will host a free movie event and panel discussion on Sunday, Oct. 18 at its Auburn Hills campus regarding the stigma of addiction.
The event is presented by Mi-HOPE (Michigan Heroin and Opiate Prevention and Education), a local nonprofit organization comprised of passionate individuals who have been personally affected by the heroin and prescription drug epidemic in our state and community.
The discussion will center upon the new recovery advocacy movement and how addiction is perceived and treated through a screening of the acclaimed documentary film, “The Anonymous People.”
Following the film, there will be a panel with four experts in the addiction field.
This discussion will be moderated by Erica Clute-Cubbin, southeast regional president of the Alliance of Coalitions for Healthy Communities Oakland County Families Against Narcotics. The panel will include:
• Macomb County 41B District Court Judge Linda Davis, president of Families Against Narcotics.
• Andre Johnson, president and CEO of the Detroit Recovery Project.
• Lauren Rousseau, WMU-Cooley Law School professor.
• Deborah Garrett, director of recovery communication with R.E.A.L. MI (Recovery, Education, Advocacy and Leadership).
The free event, which is open to the public, takes place from 2 to 5 p.m. at the WMU-Cooley Auburn Hills campus located at 2630 Featherstone Rd.
