The University of Detroit Mercy School of Law Law Review hosted a symposium titled “The Public Trust Doctrine:?An Ancient Tool for Protecting the Great Lakes from New Hazards” on Friday, Oct. 16, at Detroit Mercy Law’s campus in Detroit. Among those taking part in the symposium were (seated, l-r) Catherine Iorns Magallanes, senior lecturer at Victoria University School of Law; Alexis Andiman of Conservation Law Center; and James Huffman, professor at Lewis and Clark Law School; (standing) Noah Hall, professor at Wayne State University Law School; Pamela Zarkowski, University of Detroit Mercy provost and vice president for Academic Affairs; Jim Olson, president and advisor of FLOW—For Love of Water; Detroit Mercy Law Dean Phyllis L. Crocker; Nicholas Schroeck, director of the Transnational Environmental Law Clinic at Wayne State University Law School; Melissa Scanlan, associate dean of the Environmental Law Program and director of the Environmental Law Center at Vermont Law School; Kenneth Kilbert, professor at University of Toledo College of Law; Nina Gavrilovic, executive editor-in-chief of Detroit Mercy Law Review; and Jacqueline P. Hand, professor at Detroit Mercy Law. Topics during the symposium included “A Proper Framework for the Public Trust Doctrine and the Great Lakes” and “Trails and Microplastics: New Developments.”
