Honigman, Miller, Schwartz, and Cohn LLP is pleased to announce that Jessica M. Herron, an associate in the firm’s Corporate Department, has become a member of the board of directors for Junior Achievement of Southeastern Michigan. The mission of J.A. is to teach personal financial responsibility, workforce readiness and entrepreneurial thinking to young people through its dedicated volunteer teachers.

Herron focuses her practice on private equity, securities and corporate governance matters. She assists clients with mergers, acquisitions, financings, transactional matters, private and public securities offerings, and compliance and disclosure under SEC rules and listing standards.

She earned a law degree from Michigan State University School of Law, an M.A. in public relations from Michigan State University, and a B.A. from MSU’s James Madison College.

In addition, Carl M. Levin, former U.S. senator, recently received the Milliken Distinguished Leadership Award from the Groundwork Center for Resilient Communities. Groundwork is a nonprofit advocacy organization located in Traverse City whose mission is to protect the environment, strengthen the economy and build community. Levin is senior counsel in the Corporate Department at Honigman.

The award recognizes leaders who emulate the legacy of Governor William Milliken and the late Helen Milliken in their belief that a clean, healthy environment is necessary for a prosperous economy.
Groundwork honored Levin for his many environmental accomplishments for Northwest Michigan as a U.S. senator, including:

• Sponsoring legislation that preserved more than 32,000 acres of Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore as wilderness.

• Securing funding for the Boardman River Dams Removal Project—the largest wetlands restoration in the Great Lakes Basin.

• Playing an instrumental role in the creation of the Grand Vision, which directly engaged 12,000 people to create a consensus vision for growth and development, transportation solutions and key priorities like housing, local agriculture and clean energy in northwest Michigan.

Levin, who served 36 years in the U.S. Senate, focuses his legal practice on assisting publicly and privately held companies in identifying and addressing legal, business and reputational risks that may bring them under public or government scrutiny and result in legal action or loss of business; providing strategic advice to companies regarding public policy and regulatory issues, and issues being considered by federal, state and local legislative bodies. He also provides mediation and alternative dispute resolution services regarding complex disputes, particularly in relation to governmental units.

Levin earned a law degree from Harvard Law School and a B.A. from Swarthmore College.

Miller Canfield

 Robert Murkowski, an associate in the Detroit office of Miller Canfield, was named a 2015 “Up & Coming Lawyer” by Michigan Lawyers Weekly for making a substantial impact in the legal industry.

A member of Miller Canfield’s Litigation Group, Murkowski has litigated a variety of high-stakes corporate disputes and matters involving commercial contracts, the Uniform Commercial Code (UCC), antitrust and unfair competition laws, trade secrets, non-compete and non-disclosure agreements. Murkowski is also a member of the firm’s Automotive Group, where he regularly represents automotive manufacturers and tiered automotive suppliers in negotiating and litigating supplier contract disputes and warranty claims.

He received his law degree from Wayne State University Law School and his B.S. from Eastern Michigan University.

In addition, Steve Mann, a principal in Miller Canfield’s Detroit office, has been appointed to the Plymouth Township Board of Trustees. Mann was appointed on October 27th to fill the vacancy resulting from the death of Kay Arnold, a longtime trustee.

“My goal is to help out the township and try to bring the board back together, in order to be more functional and serve the community” said Mann, who also stated he will not seek reelection next year.  The seat Mann was appointed to fill expires in November 2016.

Mann’s involvement with the township spans over 23 years, having previously served as a township police officer for 11 years, and as an elected board member for 12 years, including one term as township supervisor and two terms as trustee.

Mann is a member of Miller Canfield’s Public Finance practice group, and specializes in the area of municipal finance, representing public agencies as bond counsel. His practice covers all facets of tax increment financing, special assessments, and economic development. He has also authored several amicus curiae briefs for both the Michigan Court of Appeals and the Michigan Supreme Court, arguing on behalf public bodies and municipal associations in cases involving complex issues related to the Freedom of Information Act and the Open Meetings Act.

He earned his law degree from Thomas M. Cooley Law School in 2004. He also earned a B.B.A. from Cleary College in 2001.

Miller Canfield also announces that U.S. News & World Report and Best Lawyers ranked the firm among the nation’s most prominent law firms in the 2016 edition of “Best Law Firms.”

36th District Court


Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder recently announced the appointment of Adrienne Hinnant-Johnson to the Wayne County 36th District Court in the city of Detroit.

Johnson has been in private practice since 2006, when she began her legal career in the Detroit area. The focus of her practice has been on criminal law, landlord/tenant and general civil matters.

Johnson serves as the board chair for the Institute for Population Health Inc. and is a member of the Detroit branch of the NAACP. She earned a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Tennessee and a law degree from Howard University School of Law.

Johnson fills the seat vacated by Judge Brenda Sanders. She must seek election in November 2016 for the balance of the term expiring January 1, 2021.

The Family Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan recently presented banners to Judge Linda S. Hallmark and Judge Joan E. Young to commemorate more than 15 years of service in the Oakland County Circuit Court - Family Division.

In 1987 Hallmark was appointed by Governor Engler to the Oakland County Probate Court bench after having served as an Oakland County Friend of the Court referee since 1980.

Young was elected in 1988 as a Probate Court judge and in 1997 was appointed as a Circuit Court judge after previously serving as the court administrator and deputy court administrator.

Both judges have served in the Oakland County Circuit Court - Family Division since its inception in 1998.

Burrell is an associate in the firm’s Detroit office. He focuses his practice in the areas of appellate, commercial & business litigation, labor & employment, and minority business enterprises.  Burrell is the president of D. Augustus Straker Bar Association; a member of the State Bar of Michigan’s Representative Assembly for the 3rd Judicial Circuit; and is an Oakland County Bar Foundation Fellow. He is also a member of the Detroit Metropolitan Bar Association, the Wolverine Bar Association, and the American Bar Association.

Burrell received his B.A. from the University of Michigan and his law degree from the Thomas M. Cooley Law School.
