Vistage Michigan selected the recipient of its top honor, the 2015 Soaring Eagle Award: Locomotive Engineers & Conductors Mutual Protection Association (LECMPA) President Susan Tukel.
The Soaring Eagle Award is presented annually and recognizes the winning member's overall success in business. It also acknowledges her contributions to fellow members of the membership-based organization, which helps business leaders make better decisions and generate better results.
Tukel, an attorney, began her involvement with 105-year-old Southfield-based LECMPA began as its outside counsel more than 30 years ago. LECMPA is a nonprofit that provides insurance for wage loss from discipline for unionized transportation workers. Tukel came on board as vice president and in-house counsel in 2003 and took the reins as president in 2005.
During her presidency, Tukel navigated LECMPA towards sustainability through streamlining its member benefits and price points. Tukel also diversified membership from LECMPA's traditional exclusivity to railroad engineers and conductors and opened it to all railroad craft and outside truckers.
"Susan Tukel is a valuable Vistage Michigan member," said Vistage Michigan President Jane Owen. "Susan exemplifies a leader who makes tough decisions to grow and provide for her customers and employees."
Vistage Michigan includes more than 250 corporate leaders throughout Michigan. The organization's members engage in ongoing peer workshops, one-to-one business coaching, speaker presentations from top industry experts, social networking, webinars and an extensive online content library.
